Who is Most at Risk for a Dental Allergy?

Although patients are at risk for dental allergies, healthcare workers such as dental assistants are in danger as well. There are a few different things they could have an allergic reaction to if they are not careful.

They can contract a dental allergy while working with a patient if they do not take certain precautions. Who is most at risk for dental allergies? Check out the information below.

Those Who Are Allergic to Latex

Patients and healthcare workers are both at risk for a dental allergy, especially if they are allergic to latex. This is why a nurse or dental assistant will ask a patient before they get started on the procedure or check-up if they are allergic to latex. Latex is used as gloves most often.

Those Who are Allergic to Metals

If you are allergic to a particular metal, you may have a dental allergy. Gold is a metal and is used for crowns. Metal bases and plates are used for partials and dentures. Before the dentist or dental assistant starts working on you, ask them if they are going to use different metals. Make sure they do not use anything you are allergic to.

Those Who are Allergic to Resin

Are you allergic to resin? If this is true for you, make sure to tell us right away because the resin is used in dental cement. We do not want to cause you to have an allergic reaction, so it is best if you are open and honest about your allergies.

What Can Be Done?
Allergy tests can be performed to ensure you are not allergic to certain things the dentist will use when working with you. As always, make sure you tell us what your allergies are before we start working on your teeth to ensure you do not have an allergic reaction to anything we use.
